FACT: The single biggest mistake any engaged couple can make is to contact a bunch of DJs and ask only for their price.

Comparing DJs by price alone assumes that every DJ who quotes you a price has exactly the same experience, musical knowledge, equipment and professionalism, so the lowest price must be "the best deal".  Price shopping with no other information works fine when pricing the same model vaccum cleaner at 3 different stores, but not when deciding on the right entertainment for the biggest day of your life!  After reading this article, we hope that perhaps you will ask some other important questions as well.

Most consumers will agree that the cheapest price rarely equals the best quality... in anything.

Since every bride wants to find the best DJ possible at the best possible price, we'd like to offer some advice to help you make a sensible, informed decision.

Along with your DJ price inquiry, why not ask a few "tough" questions, just to expose and "weed out’ any DJ amateurs posing as professional DJs.

Once you are comparing only real, reputable, professional DJ services, it will be much easier to compare prices and select the right one to meet all your needs.

AllStar Entertainment can answer "YES" to all the following questions:

Personal Data

  • Are you a Full-Time DJ Company, not a Part-Time DJ company with 9-5 voice mail and a different "regular" job?
  • Does the DJ wear a Tuxedo at my wedding and arrive early enough be completely set-up before my guests arrive?
  • Do you provide reception planning services and walk clients through a chronological "timeline" prior to the event?
  • At my event, will you coordinate and work smoothly with all my other wedding vendors as a team player?

Service

  • Can I meet with the actual DJ who'll be at my wedding before I make a decision to hire your company?
  • Will you provide a booking contract and complete, detailed wedding planning forms for both ceremony & reception?
  • Do you accept all major credit cards for my deposit?
  • Do you guarantee in writing that the DJ I book will be the same DJ at my wedding?

Music

  • Do you carry only legally purchased music (rather than poor quality copies or illegal downloads) and cover all age groups and musical tastes?
  • Do you subscribe to a professional DJ music service that provides all the new pre-releases each week in every genre, right when the radio stations get them, automatically?
  • Do you carry a full library of classical music for wedding ceremonies and can you create special music mixes if needed for my wedding party introductions or first dance?
  • Do you have emergency back-up for your entire music library at every event, just in case?

Liability & Emergency Back-Up
  • Can you provide me with a copy of your DJ liability insurance? (Now required by major hotels & other venues to protect YOU if your DJ does damage to their property)
  • Will you carry a complete extra back-up DJ system and extra microphone with you to my event in case of equipment failure?
  • Can your wireless microphones operate at different frequencies, in case of a transmission conflict or frequency interference.
  • Do you have back-up transportation available as well?
  • Does your company have other equally qualified DJs available in case of an emergency situation arising on the day of my event?

Affiliations, References & Awards

  • Are you a member of the American DJ Association?
  • Is your company a state-licensed entertainment agency with a $1,000 surety bond?
(Required in MASS to book other DJs).
  • Can you provide me with multiple DJ reviews and satisfaction surveys as references from former wedding clients?
  • Have you won any verifiable awards in the wedding industry?

Finally... the price a professional DJ quotes is based on a combination of many factors.

You wouldn't ask the caterer "How much for a meal?" They need to know what you want. For a professional DJ, it’s not "one-price-fits-all" either. To quote a price, the minimum information we’ll need to know:

  • Where is the reception (name of venue, city & state)?
  • How many hours of DJ musical performance time do you need?  (don't include travel, set-up or break-down times here)
  • Date of the event? (Since prices may be lower in off-season or an off-day etc.)
  • Number of guests? (Larger Sound System needed for 450 guests versus only 75 guests)
  • Do you need any options? (Outdoor ceremony with a 2nd DJ system, extra overtime, a DJ partner, uplighting or lights, customized music etc...)

Beware of any DJ or DJ company that quickly quotes you a price without asking what you need... A "one price fits all" answer strongly suggests a "cookie cutter" approach where every wedding they book gets the same thing regardless of what you tell them you'd actually like. We hear about this all the time...

Whether or not you've made the right choice in professional DJ entertainment will be instantly obvious at your wedding, to all your guests and family.

FACT:  "A cheap DJ is never exceptional, and an exceptional DJ is never cheap!"

We hope this helps you select the perfect DJ to entrust with the most important day of your life....
